Ali Semir, CCIM, MRICS, is a seasoned commercial real estate owner and operator. Launching his real estate career in 2004 with a residential sales license, Ali quickly expanded his expertise by founding a property management company and engaging in residential mortgage finance. He is the founder of Mosaic Affordable Housing, formerly known as James River Housing Partners.
This venture focuses on developing and managing affordable multifamily residences across Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Staunton, VA; and Macon, GA. Under his leadership, Mosaic has evolved into a syndication and asset management powerhouse, distributing over $4M to partners and managing nearly 400 multifamily units across thirteen properties in three states. Ali’s strategic vision is set to expand Mosaic’s portfolio to 500 units and over $70 million in assets under management.
Ali’s extensive background in multifamily loan underwriting is marked by his roles at Capital One Multifamily Finance, Lument Real Estate Capital, Walker & Dunlop, and Freddie Mac. His expertise has guided the underwriting of over $2 billion in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac loans, specializing in student housing and manufactured home communities. At Freddie Mac, he played a pivotal role in the Capital Markets Execution Underwriting group, leading the securitization of CMBS deals worth over $7 billion. His professional journey also includes significant positions at Thomson Reuters Property Tax Group and HSBC Finance.
An active educator, Ali has taught graduate-level courses on real estate finance, capital markets, and securitization at Georgetown University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Since 2015, he has been a mentor to graduate students at Georgetown University. He holds a master’s degree in Commercial Real Estate Finance from Georgetown University and a Bachelor of Science in Business, concentrating in Real Estate and Urban Land Development, from Virginia Commonwealth University.
